Cognitive Performance Protocol.

This protocol pairs cholinergic precursors that support acetylcholine synthesis and neuronal membrane integrity with adaptogens and amino acids that modulate stress arousal and attention, aiming to support focus, memory, and processing speed. It combines faster-acting attentional support with slower-building structural and adaptogenic effects that accumulate over weeks.

In short

The cognitive performance protocol in brief.

A quick summary. The full stack, with dose and timing for each supplement, is below.

The Cognitive Performance Protocol is an intermediate stack of 7 supplements aimed at focus: Citicoline, Bacopa Monnieri, L-Theanine, Lion's Mane, Alpha-GPC, Phosphatidylserine, and Rhodiola Rosea. 3 are core and the rest are optional add-ons, at roughly $45-70/mo. Each supplement below lists its dose, timing, role, and the evidence behind it.

Citicoline

Citicoline (CDP-choline) supplies choline and cytidine that contribute to acetylcholine synthesis and phosphatidylcholine membrane turnover, and controlled trials suggest it may support attention and working memory.

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa Monnieri bacosides are thought to support cholinergic signaling and antioxidant pathways and, in animal work, dendritic branching, and randomized trials show memory and recall benefits that build over roughly 8 to 12 weeks rather than acutely.

L-Theanine

L-Theanine increases alpha band cortical activity and modulates glutamate and GABA tone, which can support calm, sustained attention and reduce the jittery feeling some people get from stimulants.

Lion's Mane

Lion's Mane contains hericenones and erinacines that may stimulate nerve growth factor pathways in laboratory models, and small human trials hint at cognitive support, though the evidence remains early and the mechanisms in humans are not well established.

Alpha-GPC

Alpha-GPC is a bioavailable choline source that contributes to acetylcholine synthesis; cognitive benefit data in healthy adults are limited and preliminary, so use it as one option among cholinergic precursors and rely on a single primary choline source at a time to avoid excess intake.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid concentrated in neuronal membranes that supports membrane structure and signaling, and some trials suggest it may support memory in older adults; reported effects on cortisol responses to stress are modest and inconsistent.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is an adaptogen that may help modulate the stress response and reduce mental fatigue, which can indirectly support sustained attention and processing speed during demanding or fatiguing conditions.

Why it works together

How the pieces combine.

The mechanistic rationale for stacking these together rather than taking them in isolation.

  • Citicoline and Alpha-GPC both feed the cholinergic system, so treat them as interchangeable choline sources rather than stacking full doses of both; pick one as your primary precursor to keep total choline intake sensible.
  • L-Theanine smooths the arousal curve, pairing well with any morning caffeine and offsetting the mild over-stimulation some users feel from cholinergics or Rhodiola Rosea.
  • Bacopa Monnieri and Lion's Mane act on slower structural and neurotrophic timescales, so they complement the faster attentional support of Citicoline, Alpha-GPC, and L-Theanine; expect their contribution to build over roughly 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Rhodiola Rosea targets the stress and fatigue axis while Phosphatidylserine may modestly blunt cortisol reactivity, so together they may support cognition under pressure; take Rhodiola Rosea early in the day to avoid sleep disruption.
  • Bacopa Monnieri can feel mildly calming or sedating in some people, so taking it with food and scheduling the cholinergic and Rhodiola Rosea components earlier helps keep daytime alertness intact.
  • Safety: this stack combines several actives. If you take prescription medications (including blood pressure, mood, thyroid, anticoagulant, or stimulant medications), are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, talk to a clinician or pharmacist before starting, and introduce one supplement at a time so you can identify how each affects you.
