What is happening. 5-HTP can increase serotonin production and may precipitate serotonin syndrome with vilazodone.

Mechanism. Serotonin precursor loading adds to vilazodone-mediated serotonin reuptake inhibition and 5-HT1A activity.

Recommendation. Avoid 5-HTP during vilazodone treatment.
