What is happening. Cholestyramine can reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamin D.
Mechanism. Bile acid binding reduces micelle-mediated absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Recommendation. Separate vitamin D from cholestyramine by at least 4 hours and monitor vitamin D status during long-term therapy.
