What is happening. Icosapent ethyl is a fatty acid ester that requires dietary fat for absorption, and fat-soluble vitamin K1 is similarly best absorbed with a fat-containing meal. Taking them together with food can optimize absorption of both, though there is no harmful interaction.
Mechanism. Both icosapent ethyl (an omega-3 ethyl ester) and vitamin K1 (a fat-soluble vitamin) rely on bile-acid-dependent micellar solubilization and dietary fat for intestinal absorption. Co-ingestion with fat enhances uptake of both; the interaction is one of shared absorption physiology rather than direct chemical interference.
Recommendation. Take icosapent ethyl with food as directed. If you supplement vitamin K1, taking it with the same fat-containing meal is reasonable. If you also take warfarin, keep your vitamin K intake consistent and discuss any changes with your clinician.
