What is happening. Carnosine may modestly improve glycemic control and reduce AGE formation, while berberine is a potent glucose-lowering agent. Combined, they could produce additive reductions in blood glucose, a concern mainly for people on antidiabetic medication.
Mechanism. Berberine activates AMP-activated protein kinase and lowers hepatic glucose output and insulin resistance; carnosine reduces carbonyl and glycation stress and has shown modest glycemic benefit in small trials. The combination can additively lower blood sugar.
Recommendation. If you take berberine and carnosine together, monitor blood glucose, especially when also using insulin or sulfonylureas, and watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia. Coordinate with your clinician before stacking glucose-lowering supplements.
