Core mechanism

NCFM can survive gastric transit, adhere transiently to intestinal surfaces, produce lactic acid, modulate epithelial barrier signaling, and interact with immune cells. It may help lactose digestion and functional bloating when paired with compatible strains or food matrices, although results across IBS trials are mixed. Like other lactobacilli, it can cause temporary gas and is not appropriate without supervision in severe immunocompromise.1,2
