What is happening. Magnesium supplementation may help correct low magnesium during PPI therapy, but severe PPI-associated hypomagnesemia can require stopping the PPI.
Mechanism. Supplementation replaces magnesium while rabeprazole may impair intestinal absorption in susceptible patients.
Recommendation. Check serum magnesium if symptoms or risk factors are present; do not rely on supplements alone for severe hypomagnesemia.
