What is happening. Acid suppression may reduce absorption of calcium carbonate more than calcium citrate and long-term PPI therapy is associated with fracture risk.
Mechanism. Reduced gastric acidity can impair dissolution of acid-dependent calcium salts.
Recommendation. Use adequate calcium and vitamin D intake; calcium citrate may be preferred if acid suppression is continuous.
