What is happening. Calcium-containing supplements and antacids may bind cefixime in the gut, reducing its dissolution and absorption and potentially undermining treatment of the infection.
Mechanism. Calcium cations can complex with the beta-lactam structure and raise gastric pH, both of which can decrease the fraction of cefixime absorbed.
Recommendation. Take calcium supplements at least 2 hours apart from cefixime. Prioritize completing the antibiotic course on schedule.
TimingTiming & separation.
Space the doses apart by at least this window to avoid the conflict.
