What is happening. Oral nystatin can reduce viability of yeast-containing probiotics such as Saccharomyces boulardii when taken together.
Mechanism. Nystatin binds fungal cell membrane sterols and can damage susceptible yeast organisms.
Recommendation. Separate yeast probiotics from oral nystatin; bacterial probiotics are less likely to be directly affected.
