What is happening. Tart cherry naturally contains small amounts of melatonin, so taking it alongside a melatonin supplement adds a small amount of exogenous melatonin and may produce additive sedative or drowsiness effects.
Mechanism. Both products supply melatonin (tart cherry in small quantities), giving additive activation of MT1 and MT2 receptors that can enhance sleepiness and shift circadian timing.
Recommendation. If using both for sleep, start with the lower end of the melatonin dose and assess next-day grogginess. Avoid combining before driving or operating machinery until you know how you respond.
